ARE YOU A GENTLEMAN
We don’t really buy the hardline approach to men’s jewellery adopted by The Gentleman’s Journal, who claimed there are only five pieces of jewellery https://www.thegentlemansjournal.com/5-items-mens-jewellery-acceptable/ the modern gentleman should wear. There are, of course, trends and styles as with any other branch of fashion, but in the modern day and age, rigid rules should certainly be a thing of the past. That said, we’ve done a little profile on some of the most popular items of male jewellery right now.
The signet ring, although perpetually popular in some circles, has seen something of a wider resurgence in recent years. Whether engraved or left plain, there is a maturity and assurance in the wearing of this particular item of jewellery.
Other rings, perhaps with less family history than the signet, are also becoming increasingly popular amongst men. From unadorned bands to larger, more showy designs, men’s rings are no longer reserved solely to represent marriage.
Necklaces can be a great way for men to have fun with fashion, and channel some personality into their look. Chains can also be family heirlooms, while pendants complete an off-duty look.
Bracelets are bizarrely contentious ground in men’s fashion circles; some experts swear by them while others wouldn’t be caught dead wearing one. While there may be something off-putting about a grown man wearing a stack of surf bracelets, we think that pretty much anything else should be on the table!
Piercings should not preclude someone from being considered a gentleman, either. Whether you have one in your earlobe or a dozen across your body, piercings can be a great way to personalise your appearance.
Watches have been a mainstay of men’s jewellery for decades, and from the simple leather strap to a diamond-encrusted objet d’art, there really are no rules anymore. Except the limits of your wallet, of course…
What we’re really trying to say here is that men’s jewellery should be treated as a free space in which to express personality, experiment and have fun. Don’t feel tied to rules, simply choose what you like and what you feel comfortable in!
